Dave Wood Named Fisher's Male Athlete of the Year

Senior faceoff specialist Dave Wood of the St. John Fisher College men’s lacrosse program was named the College’s Male Athlete of the Year.

Wood finished his final season ranked second in NCAA Division III in faceoff percentage (.706) with 211 wins in 299 attempts. He also ranked third nationally in ground balls per game with 9.5 and finished the season with a Fisher single-season record 152 ground balls. His outstanding season earned him a spot on the Empire 8 Conference First Team, and helped lead the Cardinals to their best season in the program’s eight-year history with a 15-3 record and an appearance in the Empire 8 Championship game.

Wood, who dominated the faceoff circle the entire season, won 10 or more faceoffs in 11 games, including a College-record and career-high 24 faceoff wins in Fisher’s 13-12 win over Nazareth College April 15th. The win marked the first time the Cardinals had ever beaten their East-Avenue rival in men’s lacrosse. Wood also scooped up 16 ground balls in the win, one of seven occasions when he recorded more than 10 ground balls in a single game.

A three-time All-Conference pick and Fisher’s first ever men’s lacrosse All-American (he was an Inside Lacrosse Preseason pick, and was a USILA Second Teamer), Wood already owned the College record for ground balls and faceoff win percentage after a standout junior season, but increased his lead in both categories and closed out his decorated career with a .659 faceoff win percentage (739-of-1,122) and 513 total ground balls.

Wood graduated from Fisher in May with a degree in Management. His 3.26 overall grade point average earned him a spot on the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Scholar All-American Team.
