St. John Fisher College has named Brandon Potter ’04 as the head coach of its baseball program.
Potter was named interim head coach back in October after Dan Pepicelli resigned to become the pitching coach at Clemson University.
In his first season, Potter was named as the 2010 Empire 8 Conference Coach of the Year and led the Cardinals to the most successful season in the program’s 23-year history.
“This was about as easy a decision as I’ve ever had to make,” says Bob Ward, Fisher’s athletic director since 1987. “Brandon did a great job in every facet of coaching and leading his team and I’m confident he will take our baseball program to the next level.”
Fisher finished the 2010 season with an overall record of 31-14, setting a new College-record for wins in a season. The Cardinals won their first Empire 8 Conference title and finished second at the New York Regional of the NCAA Division III Championship, bowing out 7-6 in the bottom of the ninth inning in the title game to the eventual national runner-up.
Potter played three years of baseball while attending Fisher. As a catcher, he was named to the Empire 8 Second Team in his senior year (2004) after making honorable mention in his junior season (2003).
He also played for one year at Finger Lakes Community College, being recognized as an All-Region selection in 2001.
After graduating from Fisher, he spent a year with the baseball coaching staff as an assistant. He helped guide Fisher to a successful 26-15 season in 2006.
Potter went on to serve as an assistant coach for Minnesota State University, Mankato (NSIC – DII) where he aided in setting a school record for wins (45), and Cerro Coso Community College (Foothills Conference) in Ridgecrest, California. Between those two positions he coached five players taken in the MLB Draft.
Earlier this month, Fisher’s Dan Jurik was selected in the 25th round by the Atlanta Braves.
Potter is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and currently resides in Victor.
