The St. John Fisher College softball team
fell in its season-opener to Maryville College (Mo.), 4-3 on its first day at the Tuscon Invitational, before coming back to
win the nightcap against Sul Ross State University 7-0.
Game One: Against Maryville, the Cardinals came back from a 3-1 deficit, scoring two runs in the fifth to even out the score. Senior
Samantha Vara hit hard to the second basemen, who knocked the ball into right field, allowing Vara to round the bags and bring the score to 3-2.
Kayla Goodberlet had the tying run, nailing a home run directly over center field.
Maryville’s Megan Ryder singled to push Jessica Hall inn for the game-winning run in the top of the sixth.
A sacrifice bunt from
Jamie Harmon would put
Krista Robarge in scoring position for the Cardinals to tie the game in the seventh, but Fisher could not make the run.
Game Two:
Kelly Hausler's homerun in the second inning kicked off the scoring, tallying two runs to take the lead for good. Hausler went 2-for-2.
Megan Zoerb went 2-for-3, bringing in two runs for the Cardinals.
Fisher faces off against Neumann at 11 a.m. and Siena Heights at 1 p.m. (MST).
