The St. John Fisher College baseball team opened the 2010 season with
an impressive 20-7 win over Thiel College (PA). Although the game took place in Vero Beach, FL, Fisher had to endure the elements and play through heavy rain the first half of the game. As the sun started to shine so did the Cardinal bats, finishing with 22 hits on the afternoon. Fisher forced the action, putting the ball in play throughout the game, only striking out three times as a team.
Senior Kevin Wing led the way going 5-for-5 with five runs scored and just a home run short of hitting for the cycle. The shortstop also added a RBI, stolen base and two walks on the day. Classmates Jon Gibbs (2-for-4) and Marc Montesano (3-for-4) aided the efforts at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in an additional five combined.
Juniors Leo Fusilli (3-for-4), Ross Langevin (3-for-6) and Phil Pettinella (2-for-6) rounded out those players with multiple hits in the game. Fusilli batted in and scored two runs, Langevin scored three times and contributed a RBI, while Pettinella scored three runs and also added three RBI.
On the mound, Dan Jurik worked an out into the sixth inning, giving up only four hits and one earned run while fanning seven. Geoff Martone, Brandon Lewis and freshman Adam Pettinella gave up only two earned runs and one walk combined in relief.
Fisher will return to action tomorrow when it faces Alvernia (PA) in a doubleheader starting at noon.
