The St. John Fisher College women’s lacrosse program advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division Women’s Lacrosse Championship, as the Cardinals rallied from an early deficit and defeated visiting The College of Wooster 17-12 on Wednesday at Fisher’s Growney Stadium.

With the win, Fisher (11-6), who is 8-1 in its last nine games, will now face Tufts University (15-2) at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at Franklin & Marshall College, as the Diplomats (17-1) will host the NCAA Regional this weekend in Lancaster, PA.

Wooster, who entered today’s game with a nine-game winning streak, finishes the year with a 12-4 overall record.

Lauren Glavin led Fisher with four goals and one assist. Her last goal of the game was her 46th of season, setting a new single-season record at the College. Last week, she set the Fisher career record for assists, and now has 57.  Ashley Fenyn finished with four goals, while Courtney Clare added three goals and one assist. Goalie Vicki Sahm stopped 13 shots for the Cardinals, including eight in the first half.

For Wooster, Taryn Higgins tallied a team-high four points on two goals and two assists. Eileen Barrer scored three goals, while Becca Worthington and Hillary Darragh each finished with two goals.

Wooster jumped out to 2-0 lead after the opening five minutes and led 4-1 midway through the first half. The Cardinals, however, scored four straight goals in a 5:22 span and led 5-4 with 9:41 left. Wooster regained the lead with 3:51 left on a free position goal from Higgins, making it 7-6, but Fisher answered with two goals in the final minute. Clare’s third goal of the half on a free position shot with five seconds left gave the Cardinals a 7-6 lead going into the locker room.

The Fighting Scots tied the game at 8s and 9s, before Fisher began to pull away. The Cardinals used a 3-0 spurt to take a 12-9 lead with 20 minutes left in the half. Wooster’s Jill Lee made it 12-10 with 16:48, but Fisher went on a 5-1 run over the next nine minutes to seal the victory.
