St. John Fisher College’s
Vicki Sahm and
Mary Stimson have been honored by the Empire 8 Conference for their outstanding efforts in women’s lacrosse over the weekend.
Sahm was named as the Empire 8 Conference Goalie of the Week, while Stimson was named as the Conference’s Player of the Week, after leading the Cardinals to two wins in the Empire 8 Conference Championship and helping their team earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
Sahm was named Most Valuable Player of the Empire 8 Women’s Lacrosse Championship, as she helped leading fourth-seeded Fisher to its second conference title in three years. She made 33 saves (.611 save percentage) in the two games. In the title game, a 10-9 win over Rochester Institute of Technology, Sahm stopped 18 shots, including 10 in the second half, and allowed just two goals over the final 30 minutes.
While Sahm was sensational in the title game, it was Stimson’s performance that helped Fisher advance to the finals. On Saturday, Stimson set the Fisher single-game record with seven assists, as the Cardinals upset top-seeded and 10th-ranked Stevens 16-12 in the semifinals of the Empire 8 Women’s Lacrosse Championship. She also scored once in the win and finished the weekend with a team-high nine points.
Fisher (10-6) will host College of Wooster at 4 p.m. on Wednesday in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Championship. If the Cardinals win, they will advance to the Sweet 16 and play either Drew University of Tufts University on Saturday at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa.
