The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and Rawlings have named three members of the St. John Fisher College baseball team to the 2009 ABCA/Rawlings All-New York Region Team. Teagen Barresi was named to the First Team, Leo Fusilli to the Second Team, and Steve Karnyski was named to the Third Team. Barresi and Karnyski were the only freshman named to any of the All-Region Teams.
In just his first season of collegiate baseball, freshman Barresi batted .384 (53-for-138). The Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Year started in all 39 of Fisher’s games at third base, while tying for the team-lead in runs scored (44), RBIs (39) and home runs (six).
Sophomore catcher Fusilli earned a spot on the All-Region Second Team. Fusilli was named as the Empire 8 Conference Player of the Year after spending his freshman season at St. Bonaventure University. In 32 starts, Fusilli batted an eye-popping .455 (55-for-121) with 38 RBI and 27 runs scored.
Karnyski landed on the Third Team as a utility player. The versatile freshman played outfield (one game), catcher (three), second base (six), and designated hitter (12 games), while seeing primary action at first base (17 games). For the season, Karnyski batted .364 (51-for-140) with 39 RBI, 37 runs scored, and three homeruns.
The Cardinals finished the 2009 campaign with a 22-17 overall record and won their last five games to end the season. Fisher earned the No. 2 seed and went on to win the ECAC Upstate Championship, marking the seventh consecutive season that the Cardinals have made the postseason.
