St. John Fisher College
women’s soccer player Mary Dougherty has been named the Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 11, 2009.
Dougherty helped the Cardinals go 2-1 on the week with their only loss coming against the nationally ranked Ithaca College Bombers. The loss came early in the week and Dougherty made sure the team rebounded, scoring four goals in two days.
On Saturday Fisher hosted Utica and was up 2-0 going into the locker room at half. Dougherty scored the second goal of the first half for the Cardinals, rebounding an Ashley Florack shot and scoring easily. The goal was the midfielder’s second of the season, a stat that would not hold for long.
The women’s soccer team returned to action the next day, hosting Stevens Institute of Technology. With only a 1:15 off the clock, the Ducks scored an easy goal. The Cardinals would not roll over. Throughout the duration of the game, Fisher scored four unanswered goals, including three from Dougherty.
Her first of the hat trick tied the game when Megan Gee sent a pass that escaped the keeper’s reach and Dougherty put it in the open net. The senior’s second goal put the Cardinals up by two when she fired a shot from 37 yards away and just out of the goalie’s reach. Just a few minutes later Dougherty struck again, heading a rebounded Kaitlin Moran shot right back at the goalie for a score.
Fisher will return to action on Saturday when they host Clarkson University at 3 p.m. The game will be in the middle of a Cardinal triple-header, with men’s soccer playing at noon and football beginning at 7 p.m.
