St. John Fisher College's
Brenden Moore and
Christian Zemaitis have been honored by the Empire 8 Conference. Moore was selected as the Empire 8 Football Defensive Player of the Week, while Zemaitis was tabbed as the Conference's Offensive Player of the Week following Fisher's convincing 40-17 win over host Ithaca College on Saturday.
With the win, Fisher improves to 3-2 overall, but more importantly, 1-0 in the Empire 8. The win marks the fourth straight time Fisher has defeated the Bombers. The Cardinals are just the second program since 1975 to beat Ithaca in four consecutive years.
Moore, playing in his first game of the year, led the defense with nine tackles. He also intercepted a pass that set up Fisher's first touchdown, forced a fumble, recorded a sack and deflected a pass.
Moore, who played at Springfield College last year and recorded 50 tackles and four interceptions, started at inside linebacker on Saturday and led a defense that allowed just 36 yards of rushing offense.
Zemaitis set a Fisher single-game record with five rushing touchdowns, carrying 18 times for 178 yards. He scored on runs of 50, 9, 4, 18, and 2 yards, all of which came in the second half, as the Cardinals pulled away from a 6-0 lead at intermission.
He also tied the Fisher record for touchdowns in a game with five (a record shared by All-American Mark Robinson, who scored five touchdowns - four rushing, one receiving - in a 65-20 win over Mt. Ida College).
For the season, Zemaitis leads Fisher in yards rushing (316), touchdowns (9) and yards per rushing attempt (6.3 per carry).
Fisher will return to action at 7 p.m. on Saturday and will host Utica College under the lights of Growney Stadium. The Cardinals lead the all-time series vs. Utica 8-0, including last year's meeting that saw the Cardinals pull out a 17-10 win, despite out-gaining the Pioneers 360-73.
